evening all, when you fetch in an obj file it asks if you want the colours, normals and all this. Say you have a coloured scan as an obj file, is there a way to bring that into Shark/VC? Only I leave colours checked and nothing seems to happen? Cheers

>>Say you have a coloured scan as an obj file, is there a way to bring that into Shark/VC Color data is stored in the .mtl file for OBJ imports. It needs to reside at the same folder level as the OBJ file. Tim

Cheers Tim, I have had them in the same place, but maybe I'll try and tidy up a bit and use a separate folder and store it all together and try again. Cheers

If not feel free to private email the file. I recently made some major changes to OBJ import and will double check with your file. Tim

Hi Tim,
Just dropped you an email with a test file. If you could take a look that would be great. It's not massively important, but would be nice. Especially when it comes to organising a mesh, sometimes the colours help you figure out which bit is which!

V10 and earlier only recognize RGB color attributes per mesh in the mtl file. V11 will support texture maps as in your example for Import/Export OBJ, 3DS, 3MF, and SketchUp.

Hey Tim, cheers for this. Could you post the apple file please? I want to see how the. Mtl file looks and see if I can get the correct file type from my scanner. Cheers

Apple OBJ sent via email. A texture is specified in the .mtl file via the map_Kd field. Tim newmtl QuadMesh1 Ka 1.0 1.0 1.0 Kd 1.0 1.0 1.0 Ks 1.0 1.0 1.0 d 1.0 Ns 11.3 illum 2 map_Kd appleD.jpg

Cheers Tim. Got the mail. I'll see what export setting I can fiddle with but I don't recall seeing that type of file from my scanner software. Might hang in there for version 11 :-)

Attached is a screen grab of your example file with texture support.

>>can't get that apple loading properly? any suggestions for displaying the colours? In this case the color is defined from the texture file referenced in mtl file via.... map_Kd appleD.jpg So you will need texture support for this to display in full color. If a texture is not present it will use the diffuse color component from the mtl file... Kd 1.0 1.0 1.0 Which for the apple is set to white. If you want a red apple use... Kd 1.0 0.0 0.0 For OBJ, the mtl and image files must all lie in the same folder location as the .obj. Tim

Hi Tim,
I'm totally lost here. I have the files in the same folder as per the attached view. Is texture support some additional program or something I need? I figured I should be downloading the example. It's all in one folder, import the obj file and bam should be there?
Cheers
(I'm on windows 7 pro here, does this make a difference)

>> Is texture support some additional program or something I need? Importing textures for OBJ, 3DS, SketchUp, and 3MF will be a new feature in V11. The image I attached was from preliminary V11 build with that feature turned on, sorry I was not more clear! There is still quite a bit of work to get printing and Lightworks all tied in for this new feature. Tim

Hi Tim, Are we saying then that those additional check boxes when importing an obj don't work in V10? Cheers

>>Are we saying then that those additional check boxes when importing an obj don't work in V10? In V10, reading texture coordinates are not processed as that version does not support texture mapping. They are processed on export from objects with texture coordinates such as all ACIS based bodies. In V11 the imported texture coordinates from an OBJ, 3DS, SketchUP file are now saved with the mesh object. And one of the reasons why the v11 file format changed. Tim
