Display layers in reference file

Our part files consist of lots of lines, drawings and the solid. Attaching a file as reference to another file for assembling the parts, shows every single layer of the attached file. We would like to be able to turn off every layer that is not needed, to show the solid only. Is there a possibility, did I miss something?
