Mesh editing (adding to a mesh)

Hi there. I apologize in advance as I am not at all a 3D expert. I have a 3D printer and can do basic modelling in ViaCAD and so far have been able to do what I need. I have a project now that I am stuck on. This is a thin object that already exists. since it only 1mm thick, I decided to scan the object in 2D and use an automated site to convert the "picture" to an STL. This worked well and the STL slices and prints fine. however the little teeth in the rectangular areas need to be more prominent and rounded.
I thought I could get away with just creating some cylinders and putting them "in" the mesh and exporting. this does not slice properly and instead of of additional material added where the cylinders are, I get even more pointy "teeth".
How can I add to this mesh? Add these "teeth" to the mesh object?
thanks!

I will reply to my own question. it actually worked. what threw me was the visual on-screen result of the slicing. it showed very asymptotic points where the rounded parts are supposed to be where you see the green cylinders. initially I thought it was an artifact of mixing a mesh with an object. but i turned out, because of the extrusion width of the printer, the pointy print paths were what was needed to effectively create the cylinder shape. This makes me like ViaCAD even more - the fact that I can basically mix a mesh with objects is incredibly versatile for customizing and tweeking existing STLs.
