This may have been covered in posts eons ago and if so please show me a link.

Otherwise.. trying to understand the difference between Thicken and Extrude? I only ever use Extrude. Is Thicken a feature primarily for surface modeling?

Thanks!

>> the difference between Thicken and Extrude?

Extrude will take a closed collection of curves and sweep the curves along a straight vector creating either a surface or solid.

Thicken will take a surface, offset it, and fit new orthogonal side faces between the copies. The result is a solid.

Extrude ->rigid sweep
Thicken ->offset (result is everywhere perp)

A somewhat hidden feature of the thicken tool is that it will work with a solid. If you select the entire part, it will add thickness to the entire part. You can also select an individual face to thicken. Plus this tool will accept a negative value for the thickness.

I've been using the Thicken Tool for lengthening and shortening angle iron, I-beams and even complicated shapes as 8020 aluminum extrusions.
It works great and is a real time saver. Thanks Tim.
