I'm sure VC once had 3DS export? What happened to that?? Or am I dreaming?

VC 3D v7/6/5 had no 3DS export, use OBJ instead.

Nein! OBJ is rubbish! Scheie!! OBJ just ends in thousands of flipped normals that I haven't got the time for. It's a useless export function that many hate using- and I can see why.

FYI, When we export normals for OBJ they are extracted from the underlying BREP and should be the same as what you see on the display screen. Tim

I get OK results with OBJ files into a CAM program I have.
Pics show the original from ViaCAD Pro in blue and the OBJ import into CAM in yellow.

No worries, STL seems to work pretty well. (ViaCAD into Cheetah3D)
But I'm still confused why someone like Posh.de suggested OBJ, when a STL file is a far better solution? The problem with OBJ is that it spits out hundreds of segments that you then have to regroup, and it's a right pita if you are working with several layers...

Martin, just for the record, these are the outs from OBJ and STL. Just so you know.

Both are exactly the same part, but different file formats.

>> suggested OBJ, when a STL file The OBJ file format allows specification of the normals per vertex. In our case the normals precisely represent the underlying surface from which they came from. The STL file format does not allow for specification of the normals. That means any application reading this format will need to rebuild facet normals using approximate techniques. Tim

Thanks for clearing that up Tim. :) Either way, all I bothered about is being more productive when it comes to rendering. It's not just your software I've had problems concerning OBJ export. It's good that STL is a viable and doable option, and that's all I really care about. :) Tom

Nope STL is no good either. Fine for small parts, but for more complex models, it doesn't retain the layer, or sections. I still have to use SAT, and go via Moi3D to export to 3DS. :(
