Based on the artworks from sculptor Keizo Ushio and the polygon model from Jotero i thought i give it a try in ViaCAD. Note the reflections in the inner side of the model are a bit distorted. Don´t know what caused this, but it adds a bit liveliness to the model i think.

No problem, here we go: (first the image and then i explain it a bit.)

UserPostedImage

I started first with creating a torus which has a diameter of 3, inner hole size 1 and pipe size of 1, as you can see in the image.

Then i created for the cut 12 circles (diameter of 1.4) and arranged them like a clock. (my starting point is the 9 oclock circle in magenta. From this circle i started to draw lines at postion 12 oclock and so on 1 oclock 2 etc., so that all lines make one 360 degree rotation.

After that i used the surface skin tool to skin all 12 lines. The resulting skin face was then used to trim the torus. Finally i beveled the edges of both parts and arranged both parts in Electric Image (since this is easier for me than translating the parts in ViaCAD) to obtain the final form.

Hope this small tut makes the procedure easy to follow.

Stefan

Hey Stefan!

It looks like a golden knuckle-duster!! :D I like the distortion- it makes it more realistic.

Very cool- even more cool is how you did it! :D

Thanks for sharing :)

Stefan,
That's a very clever way to simply produce a complex shape.
I love it !

Stefan, you might be interested to know that my Father is a Dr (Reader) of Geometric Topology. In many ways he, (and the few other topologists in the world) are the fore-fathers of CAD imo.

In the meantime, steam you brain with some of this;

http://knotplot.com/

I dunno- but I wonder if some of the maths here could be worked into ViaCAD?

Thanks jlm!

Very interesting ttrw! Im always interested in Math Models and the way how they are created. A while ago i tried also to reproduce a model of a "minimal surface" but thats pretty difficult. I will give KnotPlot a try and see if i can come up with something similiar in ViaCAD.

Stefan
