Model to Sheet printing problem (#4118)

I've just purchased VC8 2d/3d (build 984) after briefly playing with the demo of VC7 but I've already run into a problem. To get started I made a simple 3d block and placed a few holes in it (simple hole, c/bore and csk hole). Then went Model to Sheet and did some dimensioning. Printed it out and it looked fine. Next I decided to shade the trimetric view and print it out but when it prints, the shaded view is stretched vertically off the edge of the paper and no longer looks anything like my design. Tried different shading options (flat, gouraud, phong). Have I done something wrong ? Also noticed when I zoom-in, the shaded trimetric view gets 'squashed' - is this a bug ?

Has anyone else noticed this or do your printouts look ok ?

Hi Jason, I'm using a PC (Win 7 Pro). I haven't tried pdf yet but will do and post my findings.

Tried pdf and also Microsoft XPS document but the results are the same as the hard copy (used the model from one of the tutorials as an example).
Can anyone confirm ?

Hi Lee
I've made some significant progress on this today. I'm hoping this will make the next build.

Hello Tim
Sorry to hijack this topic, but Pdf's resolutions are still bad/crappy on shark/viacad, other CAD softwares make lines convertions to pdf just as shark does with eps export, I mean, smooth vectors.
Look at the zoomed picture from your pdf, (zoom from red rectangle), corner curves, circles, splines and ellipses looks awful on shark/viacad pdf's files. while VectorWorks or autocad on mac (as example) PDF's curves are smooth vectors, as it should.

This topic has been discussed often over here, and, while many all discussions ends on that the pdf's quality from shark/viacad is not an issue, your pdf proves that it is.
There should be a way to have better pdf files

Thanks Tim.
How will I know when a new build is available as I don't see a 'check for update' option ?

I'm working a ViaCAD 2D/3D SP1 30 day beta right now. I'll post a note when it's ready to download.

I did some tests for PDF rendering which are attached which include:
ViaCAD 2D/3D v8 SP0
Prints using sorted facets. Curves are vectorized.
ViaCAD 2D/3D v8 SP1
Prints using a raster image at screen resolution.Curves are vectorized.
ViaCAD Pro, Shark LT, Shark FX
Prints using Lightworks scan at printer resolution.Curves are vectorized.
AutoCAD 2012 Mac
Test model exported as DWG. Prints using raster image. Curves & text are also raster. This was using "Shade" view as display option. I guess you need to print in "Wireframe" to get vectorized curves.
Please try this out in the SP1 beta and let me know your thoughts. This change only addresses model to sheet prints with rendered images in ViaCAD 2D/3D. Curves are printed using their vectorized display list.
Thanks
Tim

Version 7 was far superior than this new v8 build 1000 printing of pdf. Please use older method. With the older method it made better images all around that could be copied and pasted into documents from pdf's and looked better. The facets look better than the pixels.
Thanks
Jason

There seems to be a big difference how pdf's are displayed between mac and pc and what program used to display.
When display the pdf from v7 it is excellent on PC / adobe pdf reader
When opened on my iphone default (ibooks) its terrible
When opened on adobe acrobat app on iphone its fine.
The new pdf output in version 8 is not good because screen resolution is really only good for viewing on screen not printing or using for other purposes.
Regards
Jason

Hi Jason The advantage of facets are that they are scaled to the print coordinates. But they are sorted and have ragged edges where two bodies meet. Plus for large assemblies they make huge pdfs causing issues on some machines. Tim

Tim Can you grab the opengl image before rasterization and send that to a ps output vs using 96 dpi screen resolution with rasterized bmp? The output at 96 dpi is too pixelized. Thanks Jason

Tim,
Downloaded build 1000 and printing now seems to work ok - thanks.
The shaded view is still being 'squashed' vertically when zooming-in on model-to-sheet. This is not a big deal (for me) but thought you should know..

Hello Lee,
How did you achieve this result? I am still getting stretched/shmeered images in hard print and pdf.
TIA
Michael
PS I noted you have build 1k. I do not. If I may ask, how did you update?

Hi Luis, How do you get that model to print on the paper with the title block? I still can't figure that one out.
