I use extrusions of 2d shapes, angle iron, I-beams, tubing etc. and have recently been Grouping the extrusions to move or copy the entire object.
When moving or Copying the Ungrouped object the lines or curves used for the extrusion are not selected, and remain in the original position and do not move with the part.
Is there a way to select a part, and have everything move with it, without Grouping?

There is no real easy way to do this without grouping.

However, if your line work is a smart polygon (all the lines are one, if you select one line, the entire polygon is active), then you can select the linework and move that which will move the object if it is still associated.

Also, if you select both the line work and the object using a window select or shift select,you can move them both at the same time.

Larry - here's what I do

'Show Only' the solids you're interested in

Select them .. then click SHOW PARENTS

Select all and you're done

Tim .. there's a useful command missing here .. maybe "isolate object with parents"

What do you think .. I could use this a LOT !

Somewhere in there i am sensing an interest in an ability to select multiple objects of interest and then clicking or keying in a command to say show others like. But, i'm thinking that's what the eyelids and lashes do. Maybe a more static filter like AutoCAD's might be useful. But, VC's going away, right? I STILL haven't trialed Shark. I'm afraid that if i start, i'll get addicted and might not be able to afford to buy it. Maybe ignorance is bliss applies to me in this regard.

Illustrator has always had a terrific filter for selecting similar stuff, which I've been hounding Tim about for years :

Select same :
colour
object types
etc

Selecting out the bits you want in illustrator is very easy

Doesn't the "Select Mask" dialogue give you this ??
