Is there a way to rotate the 3D view without using the viewball? I'm used to other applications that let you hold down a key or key combination, and then use the mouse to rotate the view.

You can set a shortcut of your choosing

File menu > Shirtcuts > Viewtools > Dyn Rotate

Hope that helps

also... maybe try to press/hold-down on the scroll wheel (on the mouse) and then move the mouse. If it sometimes doesn't cooperate, then click on any line/object... and then this scroll wheel/button will center its rotation around this item/object.

Another quick method is with the space bar, and we can use this to shift the page/viewport. Press/hold the space bar and left-click the mouse and then move the mouse around...

have fun. bye

I sometimes select geometry far off the CG of what my total object is, and then I position the mouse at various locations in modelspace and then wheel-click and pivot the model from what might be deemed as 1.5 or 2 orbital axes....

Something I just re-viewed or played with after a long absence is turning on the view ball and multiple viewports. Then, in one view port, I turned on the dynamic rotate. Which is leading me to an idea to suggest.... See the suggestions page...
