I would be primarily buying the product Viacad to use with Sketchup.

As there is no demo for Viacad could you tell me:

1. Do scale, colors and so on survive the import/ export process from sketchup to Viacad and visa versa.

2. What are the known issues, if any, with the import export with sketchup.

Thank you in anticipation.:)

Scale and colors are imported. We do not support export in the first release.

2. What are the known issues, if any, with the import export with sketchup.

Known issues:
--We do not support texture data from sketchup
--Sketchup importer does not run on Vista (SDK Limit)
--Be sure to update ViaCAD to 611 to get SketchUp v6 support
--No Export

Tim,

- Will SU export be in the next release ? if yes, when ? If no, when do you think it will be ready ? I'm not asking for commitments but just to get an idea.

- .3DS and/or .FBX would be really great to have.

Thks

SU export is high on our list. My CEO asked just the other day on that one:) I'm not sure what build it will be in though.

3DS and/or OBJ are ones that I seem to get a lot of requests for. Either of these would be a great addition, but I can't provide a commitment yet.

OBJ export with the option to retain quad/n-gon tesselation would be a real winner. It would make life very much easier for who imports meshes cereated by CU into other 3D programs for texturing, manipulation, animation and so on.

Maybe have a look at how moi3d has implemented this feature
(You have to digg into the user forum to get an idea :

http://moi3d.com/forum/messages.php?webtag=MOI&msg=162.45
(look through all posts as there are examples of n-gon/quad tesselated exports along the thread)

http://moi3d.com/forum/messages.php?webtag=MOI&msg=202.1

I don't know how easy this would be to implement. As far as I know it is a feature quite unique to moi3D, at least I have never seen anything similar in other programs.

In any case I am sure a similar feature in Punch/Concepts products would be VERY appreciated by its users.

Greetings!

Am very new to Viacad and am trying to import a sketchup ver.6pro model. I am having zero luck. I have the 711 build of viacad on board.

I click File, Open, and select a sketchup file by double clicking. However, nothings seems to open. If I select File, Import, and double click Sketchup which is listed, nothing appears to happen.

I'm sure its something I'm missing, I can at times miss my house when returning home.

Any help would be appreciated.

Can you send us the sketchup file to try?

Here is a quick model that I have attempted to import into ViaCad.

Only one layer, no textures or colors, just a simple model.

Here is the attempt: and I get an invalid file message as seen here.

Try zipping the file and upload the resulting .zip.

No luck in that direction, I have WinZip onboard, but it appears to not recognize .skp files, as I have dozens but when I browse my files, it doesn't list them as files which can be zipped.

I am thinking this would compress the file in any case, and not give you an accurate file as it is stored.

Yesterday evening, I tried to import approximately 15 different sketchup files into Viacad, and I didn't get any results with any of them. From just a simple cube, to a more or less finished building. I tried wire frame, shaded and monochrome I am at a loss.

Any other suggestions would be welcome as to either sending a file, or trying a different technique in importing from sketchup.

regards

Rollin'
Do you mean you have problems uploading a file to this forum ?
It is looking very similar to the issue I have with one of my modems.
I still haven't found a way to force the files through.
With another modem (zyxel) plugged-in, everything is OK, I don't know why:confused:
Good luck,
JL

JL,

For some reason the file won't post to this forum, although I frequently send this type of file via email all the time. Not sure what the problem is, I am continuing to experiment.

I'm curious as to whether there is an idea as to when there may be a patch to ViaCad to enable Sketchup files to be imported to ViaCad on a Windows based system?

The way I understand the current situation is that on " Mac" systems this happens as advertised, but running Windows or a PC based system it's a no go.

If a patch is not in the works, any date on the next release (which hopefully addresses this issue)?

to much "intelligence" in these Mac apps...

try to rename your SU file from 'xyz' to 'xyz.SKP.ZIP' which might cheat the forum software filter concerning the file formats allowed to upload.

After downloading the file it must be renamed to 'XYZ.SKP'.. of course

ViaCAD 2D/3D Build 710 supported Sketchup Import on XP.

When Sketchup updated to Vista, we created a patch. That build number is 711.

While in ViaCAD, select the Help:Current Version menu item. It will compare your version with the most current version. Click on the download button if you are out of date.

I was overlooking the obvious, I'm hoping someone can point out the error of my ways as far as importing a Sketchup file into ViaCad (PC based).

I am running the current build, 711. However, when I try to to import a skp. file I have a blank drawing area with the exception of the axis'. I click verify and everything is zero'd out. I try to verify all the options given and nothing.

Anyway here is a zipped file:

It certainly isn't the most elegant drawing, but I'm hoping someone can help me get a handle on this.
