Back to borrowing from acad, kinda. It would be swell if we could hit esc to unselect an object, but keep command open. Say you want to rotate a surface, but you stupidly left your new construction line in red when you hit rotate. Now you have unselect line, reselect rotate, then proceed. If we could just hit escape and let vc instruct us to select item to rotate; that would be time (and flow) saved. Maybe make it fancy where double esc stops command and gets you to cursor, and triple escape to stop process (like when you understand a solid command is in nightmare and likely will give explosion/implosion shape if anything). This used to be a common ctrl-alt-. command in old math software, mostly to stop user loops or divisions by zero.

On a Mac esc is a universal key for cancelling dialogs. Some programs use tab in the way you suggest. I have found that clicking on an empty back ground is usually more than effective.

hi,
in version 9 you can assign a shortcut to "edit -> deselect all" to remove a selection during an open command.
