I want tot apply a special dimension style to dimensions in the viewports in a sheet in which I showed some views by using The Standards Manager.
Problem 1: the Standards Manager doesn™t retain the saved values for the options chosen using it in sheets. After saving such a custom-style and opening again the Insepctor shows in this special style other values then the saved ones for the options for dimensions. This all with no dimension selected.
Problem 2: I found out that using the same and saved Dimension Style for the next dimensions shows other values for almost every option (expecially the arrow-sizes and text-height). Checking the saved style again in the Standards Manager it showes even other values than previously saved or appearing during dimensioning.
How does one create, save and apply a dimension style, which can be used throughout alle the sheets and stays identical as in the style made?

Hi nov4Vc47 and welcome.

This is your first post and I have done hundreds, but we are at the same level of knowledge : I still don't understand how it works.

Every times I manage by trials and errors.

Why can't it be as simple as in other softwares ?
Ie text style settings in Word, Photoshop, Pages, Etc ...

I have had no luck trying to save the dimension styles.. Dimensioning drawings is a very wacky operation - sometimes the arrows come out enormous, sometimes very small. NO CONSISTENCY. Even after setting them up. Unfortunately I haven't figured out a way to save a "style" and use it again and again without having to change all options every time.

Thanks for the quick reply. I forgot to mention that I recently bought ViaCAD V7.
In 3D it works very good.
But the 2D-capabilities offers me difficulties.
I thought already that the dimensioning problem was difficult, as I have done a lot of experimenting.
I consider other posts about two things:
1. does ViaCAD V7 supports blocks with attributes?
2. has ViaCAD a "match-properties" (or "format-painter") to quickly change e.g. the dimensioning style to all other dimensions

Hi Jay

You can use the eyedropper tool located in the top right side of main tool bar to copy dimension properties from 1 to another.

The dimension standards are saved by standard name and retain the settings. Then if you want to draw new dimension with the standard you first select the dimension tool you want to use then go to the dimension properties tab and pick the standard all new dimensions you draw will be in that standard.

Or you can select one or more dimensions already drawn and goto dim tab and change the dim standard.

Remember the check box at bottom that will scale dimensions (arrows etc.) if you change text size. I personally uncheck this.

What values are not working in custom standards you are creating?

Jason,
Sorry, I was to hasty.
I have found the "eye dropper". It works like the mach properties. So At least that helps in quick setting all the dimensions according the wished options for them.
However the problem of not been able to create user-defined dimension styles, still remains.
But, again thanks.

HI Jay

How are you creating user styles? Can you get any to work? Do they work but some properties are not working or is the whole style not working?

Hi All
I just tried the V8 2D and the issues I've had with object snaps on the Y axis
is gone within this version and also the problem of of setting up dimension styles I have in V7 ViaCad 2D3D works fine with V8 2D.:)

In the Inspector there is the option under Dimension Styles the "Standards manager".
In that screen I put in the options the values I wish and I save the style under a unique name. Next I choose a dimension type (after activating the viewport) and in the inspector I choose the recently saved style (with the unique given name). What I get in the resulting dimension are NOT the values for the options recently saved.
And after this checking in the Inspector I see even other values for the options. And checking the saved dimension style with the "Standards Manager", I see even again other values for all the dimension options.
From Member chipmaker2 I find that now in ViaCad V8 setting up demension style works fine. So I have to consider changing to V8 or wait for the upgrade to V8.

Hi Jay
Try the ViaCad 2D beta. I think the link is in the Beta part of this forum.
Install it and give it a try. Because it works in 2D is no guarantee it'll work in
other versions.

What it comes down to is that Standards Manager for setting dimension styles is defective in version 7. Frankly, I am more relaxed having learned that in this forum. I have spent all day trying to set up a style and printing the changes over and over.

It does not work in v7 and I have to buy v8, that does not exactly seem fair now does it? Does TurboCad work for creating dimensions?

The standards manager badly needs help. Its hard to "save" a style that I can use over and over. For some reason it defaults to some disproportional font size and arrow size.

Yes, I'll second that. In a nutshell its crap. A work around is to set model to sheet up and then export to Illustrator, and then go from there. Not very elegant, but it works, and the 2D vectors come out really well. 3D export on the other hand is also crap, so avoid that too.

The other route to take is to export to dxf/dwg and open the resulting file in DraughtSight or QCad. I just tried this and it works quite well.

Tom.
Are you talking about version 7 or 8, also which things aren't working as you'd expect?

Hi All

If anyone can provide some steps to repeat in the ViaCAD Pro v8 beta that would be awesome in tracking down any issue.

Version 8 Martin.

I had to meet a deadline yesterday, and the built in dimensioning was doing my head in. Fortunately ViaCAD's DWG/DXF export works extremely well. I ended up doing all my dimensioning in QCad.

The problem is, I can't get values to stay where they are. For e.g. the default text size is 3.5. If you change it to 7, when you come back again to do another, you're back at 3.5 again (and the rest). Then there's the quitting issue, still there, and of course if you force quit, you loose all your settings in the version you just quit from.

Don't get me wrong, things like the gripper have really transformed this product, and I thank Tim for that. I just wish the old quirks and bugs could have been fixed by now.

On a positive note, despite VC's dimensioning failings, I did eventually get the project finished, and it looks excellent, both in 2D and 3D. :)

I'm not seeing these problems here.

To set a Dimension Standard as default, it needs to be done with no objects selected - is this where the confusion might be?

Any specific examples (steps to repeat, movie, example files) would be most helpful, especially now that we are in beta where we can get the changes out to many folks to test before release.
