Programming animation (#2457)

I am looking for a renderer where I can program the movement of more than one object relative to each other in an animation. Such an example would be a rotating cam-wheel with a cam-roller transferring the movement to a linear guideway. Will any such option come to Shark in v6?

hey just to let you know this is my current interest too.:)

OK Bunkspeed looks like good animation. But what I was looking for was more like what just dropped down in my mailbox. Too bad it's for Rhino: Rhino Assembly, kinematic simulation.

Hi Toret,
my searching also came up with the rhino plug in , I also found this which may be interest
http://www.ar-cad.com/freecad/index.html . I have not downloaded it as yet. My project involves door locks so the mechanisms such as cams with cam followers as you describe would be very useful.I have tried simple visualisations using the rotate tool while holding the option key, and then manually adjusting the other objects to gain a sense of how the parts work as a mechanism. I would have thought some simple constraints such as axis , rotation and distance applied to objects would be very useful in shark. Has anyone done this type of animation in shark fx or viacad ??

I modeled up something simple in a different cad system to see what motion was all about. I too am curious if we can do this in ViaCAD or Shark...

Just had a look at the animation tools in shark fx now that I understand them better I think they will work well for some simple mechanisms. I am going to try a cam type mechanism latter and will post some sort of result. :)

Nice work Mikeschn , alibre looks like its got alot to offer as an alternative to solidworks etc ( including (cad/cam options), however if we could do stuff like that in shark/viacad on the mac that would be great.

I couldn't find the animation tools you speak of. I found the gripper, and you can move or rotate one piece at a time... but that's a far cry from "motion".

I tried it quickly...

heres a screen shot of the animation tools and an example of how far I have got, ( not far !!!).I have not established how to set the origin for each object to enable them to move within a animation scene. I presume all three items are working in the global coordinate system , therefore with the 2nd tool I specify the object origin and a rotation , for objects 1,2,3. 3 animation icons are visible however when I select the scene , the best I can get is a rotation around the first origin ????

I get an error when I try to open your .mov. QT says it's not a movie file. Mike...

That movie worked! Does the animation give you what you were looking for? Mike...

Before I can answer your question as to wether the animation gives me what I am after , I have to say I do not understand how to use the software feature. I have not worked out how to specify multiple object centers. If i were able to do this and then animate a scene with multiple objects moving at specified rotation / translate degrees it would be a useful feature to help define assembly motion relationships , even without true motion control as other specialised software offers . I am not sure wether its just me ( not understanding ) or a software glich!!??? anyone else willing to give it a go ???

can anyone have a go with the animation tools , I have not been able to get objects rotating from the origin where I click .????

Since your animation is composed of fairly simple extrusion, you might be able to create a system of equations for the motion using 2D parametrics for the motion and bodies. I would find that to be unwieldy beyond a few simple bodies.
Cheetah3D is inexpensive, probably supports inverse kinematics, and you can import your parts into it as facets. I think that it is only for OSX though. There are probably some other inexpensive windows packages.
I just don't think that SharkFX is going to do what you want.

Thanks Tom , Cheetah certainly looks impressive and affordable .I am realistic about my expectations for the animation tools in shark , I guess I am looking foe someone else to give them a go and confirm am I doing something wrong or is it a non functioning software item ???? I am on mac .

I think that it really comes down to the fact that SharkFX supports animation but not kinematics. You can animate by stop action, a frame at a time, but that would be exceedingly tedious for complex assemblies.

So Tom, are you looking for a kinematics solution too? Just wondered! Mike...
