Adobe Illustrator Export Question (#756)

How does Concepts/Shark/ViaCAD translate Illustrator files for export? I always end up with weird sizing...by weird I mean not full scale. Not a big deal...just wondering to get a little more accurate/predictable. I actually use it to draw orthos and I have to use Illustrator to assemble to send for manufacture. Thanks!

I think the trick is to zoom to the exact scale you want to export BEFORE you export to AI... so scaling to 1:1 on a laptop might not show your model on screen, but should be correct in the exported file. Hope you understand what i am hinting at ...

Thank you Birger! Perfect! I got the hint! I didn't realize that it was scaled to the screen, not the file.

Yep, Tim .. that's not entirely obvious .. a note in the export dialog would really help clear that up !

Yup, understand. As text hint displayed in the dialog box? A scale value?

If it's not hard to put a scale value in there - then I guess that would be most useful The confusion here is (I guess) that it's the only exporter that works on this basis I think adding a scale value box would be a huge improvement

Whilst we're on the subject of making things more obvious for users .. the import dialog would really benefit from a text hint to suggest .. "Please export from Illustrator as a version 8 file" (Most of us know this - but it's not obvious for students and early learners)

Hello All Call me crazy but why not just automatically export at 1:1 as per all other translators? All the best Nick

I agree with this - mainly for consistency's sake. Adding a scale input would seem like feature bloat to me. 1:1 would be sufficient.
As Jol suggests, the note in Import to ensure the file was saved from Illustrator as a V8 (last EPS) file could be useful.

"Call me crazy but why not just automatically export at 1:1 as per all other translators?" But that would make them all work the same way ! You are crazy

I would not like to export a city or even a building or a space rocket in 1:1 scale... Illustrator has an artboard of limited size, used to be 4x4 meters. I vote for scale selector in export dialog.

Very good point Claus !! How it is now is confusing as it is different from the other exporters So, specifying a scale on export seems like the right solution !!

not sure it matters when you export something as big as football stadium as illustrator has option to scale to artboard upon import?

hi all, ...as an Illustrator user since about 1988... The Illustrator "artboard" has gradually become larger, but is still limited.. I agree with you that it is essential to be able to know the proper scale for any data both "in and out" of AI. The present version of Adobe illustrator (CS3) has a maximum "artboard" of about 5,8x5,8 meters or so... so still no chance of getting my vessels to fit in 1:1 scale...
