My horizontal and vertical dimensions seemed to be switched. Both vertical and horizontal always read zero and the zero is oriented 90degrees to the line. I think this also related to the arrow keys. The arrow keys are opposite of what you expect in the top view. Another thing i just discover when i type words they look fine, as soon as i hit enter they rotate 90 degrees .
