I think it exports all your parts in separate files .. try it !

Jol,

Excuse my ignorance, I'm new to ViaCad and have only used it to model single meshes for export to modo. I read the term "parts" on these forums often and am wondering what exactly makes a "part". Is it just a separate model on another layer or is there more to it than that? Can a layer contain multiple parts? In other words, is a part just one solid, even if multiple solids on the same layer are assembled into a larger piece?

The CAD world has terminology that is alien to me, I apologize for asking what I'm sure are irritatingly rudimentary questions.

Thanks.

-Seb

Essentially, it will take any solids that are not booleaned together and save them as separate files.

So if you model a nut and a bolt, for instance, exporting without 'multi-file' checked will save them as one big mesh for modo. Checking 'multi-file' will save each solid - the nut and the bolt - as two separate STL, DXF, etc. files in the chosen directory.

These separate files should maintain their spatial relationship so that when you import them into another program, they fall right into place!

I use this a lot for exporting to Maxwell - I ensure the major parts with material differences are saved separately.

Thank you Dexter, that clarifies a lot. Seems to me it's a relatively new feature? I don't remember it being there before, and I remember wishing for something like that for the DXF exports.

Thanks.

Not sure how long it has been there, but it's of course only available when you save "selected only."

I like the look of your website, by the way... My son likes your MetalMan Thing!

Thanks for the kind words Dexter. How old is your son?
