I think it's a combination of pitch AND number of revolutions. I've attached a pic with show points enabled on a range of projected helices all derived from the same pitch. Only the projection of the shortest helix has periodic point placing. The curve below the the short one is a copy of it that's been scaled by two along x, it retains the periodic point count. Punch's product matrix states that curve projection in Shark uses Catia licenses and is exact. Within limits, it seems. The bottom curve generated over the construction rectangles is interpolated and is sinusoidal, except for the first and last period, so while the projected helix might be potentially useful, I couldn't trust its accuracy unless I'd checked the point placing, even if it looked right.
