I am trying to get a handle (no pun intended) on how to move a solid and align with another one in VC In my example I have (2) cubes. #1 is a 3x3x3. #2 is a 1x1x1 I want to move the smaller cube #2 to where it's top face is on the same plane as the top of Cube #1, with #2 centered inside #2 in the X-Y directions. I don't see how to snap to a face. In my old software I could snap to the face to be moved, then pick a move tool and snap to the face of the other cube. What is the correct way to do this? Preferably without any construction lines.

There is a magnet tool (symbol is literally a magnet :-)) And within that toolbar is a number of alignment tools. You click one and get I think 4 extras that pop out. Face to face, hole alignment thing and a few others.

You can use the magnet tool. I recall there being a video as far as using the alignment tools such as mating. Can't find it anymore.

Watched the video for the Magnet tool, tried it. I select the top face of box #2, identify that plane. Select the top face of box#1, select that top plane/face. It moved the box but puts box2 on top of box 1. I want it inside it.
I tried the move (translate) tool but it seems to move in one plane only. The box does not get positioned anywhere near the middle top edge. :/

Part of my problem is I can't snap to the midpoint of the face. I thought I was, but it only worked in pure iso view (from menu). Well that just makes it look like its snapping to the face's center, I believe it is snapping to the rear vertical edges center not the face. So, I see no way to snap to the face. And it's the 2 faces I want to move. I do this kind of alignment move all the time in my other software (Microstation), their accudraw system, intelligent snaps and 3D movement tools are quite painless and intuitive. Not trying to criticize this one, I want to learn the workarounds so I can migrate. Microstation is jut too expensive for my needs.

Looks like it only snaps to the normal of the surface since it is a solid cube and thus it puts it on the outside. Maybe not with surfaces. Alternatively, just create another cube in the center of the cube, you can use the gripper using the option key and drag the yellow square of the gripper assuming you have uniform scaling on. when you drag it creates another cube dead center and you can shift it to any side while keeping workplane on. of course you would have to switch view depending on how you work with views.

you might find "translate" and "rotate" a little more intuitive. I frequently add a "point" to the object being moved and then "group" the object and the point. the "point" makes "translate" and "rotate" a snap since you're in charge of where the "point" is added!! see collage below

The magnet tool is just a simple aligning operation. You can move the aligned cube afterwards, I would suggest using the align tool ->tops or whichever face you choose.
However, if you are trying to produce a hollow cube the shell tool is the way to go.

Hello
You can use the translate tool and the logi cursor snaps.
Activate translate tool
Hover mouse over the (midpoint) of one edge top side of the #2 cube, then hover over another side (midpoint) and slide to the center of the cube and click when you have snaps showing intersection.
Go to cube 1 and repeat.
Regards
Jason

re "move cube afterwards" Option: In my old software I could constrain an axis. So for example if I used the magnet tool to locate my small box on top, then I wanted to move it down, I could activate a front view, then constrain X and Y and use a move(translate) tool to move in the Z direction only.
In ViaCAD, how/what is the best way to do such a move where I want to move an object on one axis only, z for example, and prevent movement in the other 2 directions (X-Y)?

Therefore ViaCAD has a gipper. Only select the object and pull the z-axis-gripper-flash. horst.w GER
