Add objects tool removes a solid

Can someone please explain to me why when I try to ADD SOLID the part I click on to add to is removed after clicking the solid to add.

Can you post a pic of what you are trying add together? What do you mean removed?

The Wireframe view shows only edges - a sphere has no edges so there is nothing to show. If you change to Display with Shading then the sphere will be visible.
You can also turn on ISO lines in the Inspector -> Object Properties -> Display
