I try to add 2 bodies but i get told "unknown error".

In the past i had some problems with my system (ViaCAD 3d Pro Version 10 on a Dell Laptop with Win 7), which could not get reproduced by others. ( http://forums.punchcad.c....aspx?g=posts&t=8316 )

Maybe this addition works on another system.
This is the last modification i have to do on my project.
Next Wednesday i got a date at a company, who should produce that thing.
There i have to deliver a readable STEP-data.
Exporting to STEP is another problem as most data, which i export to STEP can not get read by others.

I would be appreciated if anybody could do that addition and send me a readable STEP-Data back.

Thank you very much !

Christoph

Hello Christoph,

When I open the first object and do a Verify -> Check Obj there is a few errors found in the object. That could be the issue with adding objects and the quality of the step file.

Jason

Hi Jason,

thank you for your reply!

I found that check function and got the same table of errors.
Unfortunately the repair function shown in that table does not work. Maybe it is too complicated.

Do you see any posibility to repair my thing or do i have to build it up from the bottom again?
If i have to do so, how can i avoid to get these errors again?

Thanks,

Christoph

Christoph,

It looks like it when there were multiple faces blended together see pic1 for where I am guessing the issue is. I would use the verify check object at multiple stages as you build the part, like when adding to bodies together or doing a complex blend then you can repair as you go. I bet it can't repair because it wont know how to fill the blends of many surfaces coming together at the same areas now that there is so much geometry added to the model.

I found an example of a bad face see pic2, when the blend or addition happened it looks like it had a bad point and created a bad face. You can use the remove face tool on the bad face in pic2, but finding the bad face in the area in pic1 will be very difficult but you can try.

Do you have a older versions of the file saved? I try to save the model after various major changes so i have an incremental backup to use if something happens. I also remove all splines and use the "Arcs from Curve" tool a lot to help simplify the curves before creating 3d geometry.

Regards

Jason

Hi Christoph,
I had to slightly modify the part you were adding.
The before and after .jpgs show what I am referring to.
A .stp file zipped is also attached, it was over 8 meg.

Hi Larry, hi Jason,

thank you very much for your effort !

Larry, great, as far as i can see, you just rounded one corner a little and suddenly the addition worked.
But how does it look if you re-import your STEP-Data?
On my computer it looks like that:

UserPostedImage

Don't worry, that "ghost snake" I got fairly often (and even worse), when exporting my part to STEP and re-importing to my ViaCAD.

Jason, I found an older version of my data which the analyser told to be ok, but those two examples of multiple or bad faces you show, are already there in that old version.

UserPostedImage

So i start again on that version and try to update all the modifications using the analyser and save to new versions fequently.
Maybe that works. We will see.

Thank you very much !!

Christoph

Hi all,

some more news ...

took the old data, updated the part and checked severel times with the object-analyser. Everything ok.
Exported to STEP and re-imported - looked ok but the analyser found a lot of errors as we had on the data earlyer on this topic.

Hi Pomi!

I have imported the object in my 3D-Slicer-program "Simplify3d" and there where 2 massages

- Not manifold and

- Self-intersection areas

The Non-Manifold-problem I could solve by using NETFABB Online but the intersection-problem is still existing.
Is only a very small area, look at the picture.

I try to export the STL to STEP that you can use. Attachment is following.

I'm sorry but the try was not successful.

VCP 10 couldn't export the imported STL to STEP.
Other tries: transform the STL to a solid, failed because VCP 10 is limited to 3.000 triangles - far away!
The export to a ViaCAD-format (V9) was ok but my laptop has not enough power to export the new vcp to step. So it seems, but perhaps it is one of the resting issues which is blocking the computer.

STLs are not allowed !!!! <<< Attached the fixed STL-File for trying your own. >>>

I think, in a forum about a program we talk about it must be possible to attache all formats the program is able to transform.
Very annoyed.

.stl is an allowed format on the list of permitted types. It's a mystery.

Unfortunately no, but a good idea for the next time, the relevant files are deleted.

If the detour STL > STEP is a possiblity to solve problems, everone can use Netfabb Online, it is free. In the internet perhaps there are existing other solutions working directly with a corrupt STEP-file; I don't know, I don't work with Step.

I'll try a zipped .stl, just to see if it might help.

Try adding .txt as file type attachment to see if that'll upload, ie *.stl.txt. My office occasionally uses that as a workaround when there are restrictions on type. Trim it back after download it that works.

I remember something about 4.5Mb or so being the upper limit on size.
