I'm having problems joining curves and straight line to create a surface to extrude. Window comes up saying gaps in curve . fix and redo operation.
What is the work-around for this?

Sometimes they are hard to spot. I found the usual places are a radius or fillet.
Zoom in and Trim or Extend your lines.

Yes.
I agree with Larry, I find the trim tool often heals the gaps.
I am using SFX V8 and in that version just before the popup message appears you can sometimes spot a blue star that indicates the gap.
It would be better if the message appeared off to the side, because you tend to have the item you are extruding center of screen and the message distracts and hides it.
I have often thought that it would be good if the blue spot stayed until the next click on the screen rather than disappearing straight away.

Something else you can do is try the new Repair Profile command introduced in V10.

SHOW POINTS
-Select the profile and turn points on. (Edit > show points)
-Zoom in on each point to see the points that aren't connected (Last resort)

TRIM TOOL
-With the points on it's easier to use the trim tool to select adjacent curves (Fast and simple)

RADIUS TOOL
-If the trim tool fails use the radius tool (if the design allows or to identify the problem)

CHAIN SELECT (my favorite tool for extruding)
-Select one segment and chain select (shift + tilda)
-The chain select will stop at the gap, unless...
*You selected the first curve in the chain and there is only one gap
-If first attempt doesn't work try starting at a different point
-You can create a second gap by hiding one of the curves and try again

It takes the hassle out of picking.
Which menu does that hide under?
