I'm using ViaCad 2D/3D for a few years now, but still haven't figured out how best to split a solid. The manual says you have to use Infinite plane. But when I do that, it will create a small rectangular which you can't enlarge. Can't figure out how to do this. The whole thing with "arrow side is removed" is still a riddle to me. Which arrow of what?
I want the parts to become two individual pieces.

Thanks for the reply. I think I got it. At least partly. You place the tiny, tiny Infinite plane icon on the cut, select the solid and then click on the Infinite plane icon. Now I get a straight cut. But now I'm trying to use a curved plane. I've created curves (Beziers) and lines, used Cover surface to create a plane, but when I want to use this to cut the solid, it tells me 'Inconsistent face-body relationship'. Did you intend to add a video? I don't see it, only double posts.

Hi Macnavi.
The little Square has a arrow on it, but it is a bit hard to see.
It is the little needle coming off the square.
The way I do it is,I draw lines to position the infinite plane, then delete them if i don't need them.
I tried to make a video.
hope this makes sense and helps

Thanks for that. It also reminded me that one can use a line on a solid to push/pull, I had forgotten about that. Why are you using two lines? If I use one line and put the Infinite plane icon on the line, somewhere, it does a straight cut as well. Now I can do a straight cut, but what when it is curved?

The two lines are because I had selected 3 points in plane. SFX V8 has 6 options to choose from. "Now I can do a straight cut, but what when it is curved?" Now you are asking the hard questions. :-) I don't know, but as a work around I would try and extrude a thickness of say 1mm, add 1mm to the object to be cut, then use the subtract solid tool. Perhaps someone else knows how?

I know how to do it with a solid, but I actually started asking the questions as I want to understand the cut with the plane. You can make way more advance cuts this way.

Ok I had a play.
Select the bends, lines, curves
Use the Extrude surface tool.
Place the surface, in the solid.
Then select the split solid tool.
Hope this makes sense.,
Its bed o'clock here so i will look in tomorrow. :-)

I didnt know you could, and just tried but it did not work. What am I doing wrong?
I created simple cube and drew a line across by snapping from one side to the other of the top face (as shown).
But when I hovered the Push-Pull tool over the top face, I was only able to select the whole face and not half and half. I must be doing something incorrectly..

Are the end of the lines really touching the edge? Maybe turn the solid a bit, from another angle. I just tried it and it really doesn't work any easier than drawing the line and pull/push. If you can't work it out, post a video, so we can see where it goes wrong.

I've got a video at masterviacad.com that does some splits that might be helpful.
Around the 2:50 timeline in the video I show splitting a complex solid into something that can be shelled using an infinite plane and extruded surface.

Thanks, Im going to put a video showing what happens. But I think it might be that the Push Pull tool only works on faces that are split with a line that connects two Mid-points or two End-points. Any other arbitrary point does not work at least not for me.

Actually now it seems to be working. I went to the Snaps tool box and was messing around with it. Now the Push Pull tool works on any line that I add to a solid face.
