This is a real problem and is causing me a lot of trouble, when plane only is on and a large number of points have been created it will not pick up the start no matter what.
If the number of points is relatively few the spline will close but if there are a large number of points it will not pick up the start.

In the attached screenshot the small spline in the middle closed but the ones on either side would not, look where the spline on the right thinks where the start is!
To add to the misery there is no way to close the spline without inserting another one and then joining them, this increases the number of points drastically and is worthless.

I attached the wrong screenshot to highlight where it thinks the start is, it is infuriating!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not sure if this will help but I played with it and it will pick up any point as the start but not the start.
