Just curious, what program does a good job generating gcode from exported (stp or step) files?
I see CamBam, and a few others, but I'd like to hear from someone who has actually had success in
gcode generation.

Thanks,

DanL

Hello DanL

I must have the GCode for printing with a 3d printer.

For this exist various slicers.

A good freeware is slic3r (comes with repetier). A bit more happy I am with the slicer from MatterControl. A goo work I have with Simlify3D but this is not free.

All this programs makes GCode, but all in a bit different way.

Is what you searched?

Regards Roger

mastercam if you are doing more than waterline code is the bar by which others are judged. I have not yet tried autodesk labs cam on a machine yet, but it has ability to work with dwg (obviously) in a smooth solid interface opposed to stl triangles - and free!

I'm still learning how to use my desktop CNC, a Carbide3D Nomad 883. The CAM software that is included with it is MeshCAM. It creates g-code for CNC machines, but I'm not sure if that code would work for 3D printing.

Actually, my question went to CNC, not additive processes. I'm thinking a lot of detail would be needed for specific gcode generation, i.e., toolbit type, diameter, feed and rotation rates, type of controller. Not an easy answer for this one, I fear.
