assuming none of the solids involved are on locked layers, what are the potential reasons I'm unable to subtract solids (multiple) from a given solid? how are the potential problems fault isolated and corrected?? solid that is being subtracted disappears as expected but the other solid is unaffected.................

You could try confirming that they do intersection using the Intersect tool.

thanks for the reply and idea. the "intersection tool" doesn't think they intersect either....... there in lies the mystery as the attached image illustrates
