Hi,

I'm on the fence about buying ViaCad Pro v9, but before I do, I downloaded the trial version to test it to see if it fits my needs.

One issue I have noticed so far is GPU acceleration on the visualization of the 3d models. for simple models it is not an issue, however when I load large and complex models the frame rate lowers considerably making it painfully slow. I have read somewhere that ViaCad uses OpenGL for GPU acceleration, however I don't see why it gets this slow if it is in fact using openGL.

I have also tested the beta version of Shark FX 9, and it seems to have a new feature, "enable openGL" on the "Shade Option" menu, if this is enabled, the visualization becomes butter smooth like it should as it is usign GPU acceleration; However that option is missing in Shark LT 9, ViaCAD pro 9, ViaCad 2D/3D, I have downloaded all of them to verify that is not a problem with my GPU driver.

By default ViaCAD and Shark use your OpenGL hardware and drivers. Shark FX has an option to turn off OpenGL and use only 2D graphics via the CPU. This feature is used primarily by support tracking down OpenGL & print issues with customers.

I have found display performance to be affected by the following:
--Updated OpenGL drivers from vendor (first thing tech support will ask)
--OpenGL board
--Number of facets being displayed
--Number of edges being displayed
--Anti-alias on/off, hardware supported
--Automatic silhouette calculations
--CPU (as it feeds data to the board,lesser extent )
--32 or 64 bit app for large display lists

For anything more specific, I'd need to see the file and do a performance profile with some of our development tools.

Thanks a lot for the quick reply.

I was able to improve the performance with your suggestions.

I managed to improve it by activating the "Use Vertex Array" option on the "Shade Options" Menu, this increased the memory used but increased the performance considerably. I also reduced the resolution of the model to improve it even further (it seems like my old laptop's gpu is not powerful enough for that complex model with super fine resolution, "fine" is much better in my case.)

However i found another issue, when activating the Viewport to three, I get graphics issues when running on Windows 8.1, see below, and trying to re-size the viewports or rotate the model makes it even worse. I tried the same model with another laptop with a slightly better GPU but with Windows 7 and i am able to resize the viewports but rotating the model on them still results in graphic issues.
