I was using the new mesh tools and converted the finished object from SubD to NURB, I then tried to join the NURB object to another object I was working on which I had used the regular surface tools to create. Things got pretty strange when I tried it, what I found was if I used the Change Object Type function and used the surfaces selection on the object created with the regular surface tools, that surface became the same as the NURB surface and could be joined without any problems. Before the surface was converted the object properties in inspector only had two tabs and after conversion the data tab was added, what kind of surface do the regular surface tools create?

Did you turn mesh into SubD before using SubD to NURBS? When you transform from SubD to NURBS you should get a solid, so if you want to boolean this to another object that object also needs to be a solid as opposed to a collection of surfaces. If your regularly created object was just composed of surfaces then you could either stitch this into a solid and boolean to SubD to NURBS object or as you discovered you can convert the SubD to NURNS solid in to a collection of faces with Change Object Type and then stitch these surfaces together with the surfaces created using traditional construction methods. All the best Nick
