General surface modeling strategy

Hello, I have Viacad 8 2D/3D and I'm presently trying out Pro 9. I've done quite a bit of 2D but not much 3D. I'm having trouble understanding how to lay down a general shape then add detail to an area. For example, I can throw down a couple curves and skin a surface that looks like a car door (just the outer shell). Suppose I want to add Ferrari-style air scoop or a simple depression for a door handle. I've tried projecting curves on to the surface but I can't seem to manipulate them by dragging control points. What's the general strategy for doing something like this? Thanks. /Daryl
