Can someone point me to any tutorial that shows how to do a spiral-helix to create a hose real drum? This could be waterhoses, wire spools, crane cable drums, etc. I cannot seem to do this in SLT. Obviously, it would be necessary to specify the length and diameter of reel wire or hose that has to be coiled backward onto the reel. I am not concerned with any anchor point or kink/bump/knot at the startting point since that would (I presume) require very special attention. I though pitch would help, but I seem unable to get the length of hose to go back and forth along the spool path, as in accumulating the reeled-in wiring/tubing. If the tube length and diameter are known, then it can become possible to know how much hose can be cranked back for storage, and how big the spool-restraining end plates need to be to keep it organized. For now, I have to settl on doing a bunch of spirals placed side-by-side. Thanks!

Some project objectives can be accomplished better in the real-world prototyping phase of product development. Anyway, are you trying to create geometry that winds around a column, and then over itself, just like a hose would in the real world? how much variance in length can be tolerated? Btw, I have had a similar challenge in the past. I found that using an existing product and modifying it gave me a very good estimate, and I modified the length to fit during prototyping. The geometry I created as a "clearance" reference was essentially a few concentric rings that had a common wall thickness and height, but varying diameters of course. Good luck

I did this in MoI as I don't have access to my ViaCAD computer at the moment - it should still be doable though.
Martin.

Hi Martin,
Using a combination of helix curve tool and solid sweep tool I was able to make something in SharkFX that resembles the wrapping hose. I had to reverse (OPTION) the helix and, of course, increase the diameter. Rotated the exterior helix about 90. Then used a solid sweep with guide to connect the inner helix to the outer helix. Now, I will try to upload the zipped file (its a step). If you'd like I can send you the SharkFx file (zipped) for you to study. Tem

I just remembered, use the "smooth fill curve" between the ends of the helixes that you want to connect.
