Ran into this today as I took the learning curve at 5mph over the speed limit... :) I had a solid that ran through another solid, and wanted to clip it so that only one side of the projection remained. Subtract, Trim and Split all do an excellent job of removing the intersection of the parts, resulting in a solid that has two disjoint components. However, you can't select just one of these components and delete it, since they are both parts of the same solid. I finally figured out that I could convert the solid into surfaces and then delete the surfaces I didn't need, but I am wondering if there is a more elegant way to do this, that retains the "solidity" of the remaining component. I suspect that I could put a plane in the gap between the components and split thin air, but is there an easier way than that?

After the fact, immersing one part in a block primitive and subtracting the block from the solid will do it, or immerse the part you want to retain in a primitive and intersect them. Most versatile would be splitting the solid with the subtraction piece (split solid tool, solid utilities category) before you subtract it.

I'd use the Split Solid tool - seems to do what you're asking for. Martin.

You are correct; Split solid does seem to work, at least with simple solids being used as the cut part. I was sure I had tested all the various tools, but I must have not gotten that permutation. Thanks for the help.

Trim Solid will remove part of the solid from one side of the trim line/plane.

One thing I have noticed is that splitting a solid with another solid can cause weird anomalies. One time, I discarded the parts of the solid I didn't need after the split, unioned the part of the split I wanted to the splitting object and deleted the parts I didn't need, and proceeded upon my merry way. Some time later, however, when I removed a feature that I added subsequently, and which did not have any interaction with the area of the solid that contained the split solid, the split subpart disappeared and was replaced by one of the OTHER parts created by the split (a part that I had deleted)!

I recently made some changes in the v9 betas regarding splits, maybe related to what you are seeing. Tim
