how can you assign the esc key so that you don't keep having to go to the selection arrow symbol to get out of a command?

Short answear, you cant. Just another short coming of the shortcuts manager. Pressing the esc key (mac) exits you out of the manager. I used to use the tilde "~" key for the arrow, but recently moved the arrow to a key on my mouse by programing a key that is hard to find and not used for anything that makes sense, so now use the tilde is for measuring distances. Tim, One day, hopefully before another ten years go by could you please give the shortcut manager some love, as it is still stuck in 1998, despite numerous requests from users over the years.

Hi Paul,
The ESC key cannot be assigned because it is hardwired by some of our licensed technology to abort certain commands. IE ACIS and LW.
