Moi3d vs PunchCAD (#4329)

Hello Everybody, I would like to take a question. Some years ago I purchased Moi 3D (v1, v2) but nowadays and meantime I realised I need something more as for detailing drawings etc. I experienced that Moi 3D is quiet a strong and stable application I have never met with this. So I love Moi3d. The my main problem is that the usage is too limited I mean a lot of features are missing; printing, section drawings etcetera... So I would like to give away but I am not 100% sure. Is anybody here who use Moi 3D and Punchcad as well and help me making a decision?

What sort of things do you model and do you need to have things like DXF import/export? Martin.

Hello Martin. So I usually model many things, buildings, building components (for presentation) and design products and I would like to use viacad as a main application. Well dxf export- import would be important feature as well.

I suggest you download the demo, if you haven't already done so and try it out. There are plenty of people here that will help you if and when you get a little stuck I've looked at MoI and sometimes experiment with the demo and it is very good, but like you, I find it doesn't have some of the essentials that are vital for the kind of work that I do, such as line styles, DXF import/export, dimensioning and few other things as well. One up and coming tool in MoI v3 (beta) that looks superb and should be built into ViaCAD/Shark, is the Flow tool, which allows curves and solids to be applied to another solid/surface. As an example, one user used the tool to fit the surface terrain of the continents to a sphere to recreate the Earth :D It's also possible for you to design in MoI and add features in ViaCAD, if that suits you too. Martin.

If you're doing buildings, I'd recommend SketchUp Pro instead of ViaCAD. SketchUp doesn't seem to need a lot of power, whereas ViaCAD does. Also ViaCAD imo is better suited to product design rather than architecture (despite having architectural tools). Moi3D is a pita, because it doesn't play nice with DWG, won't print and won't render. SU Pro otoh handles DWG/DXF with ease.
It's worth having a look at these pages, just to see how powerful SketchUp really is.

The PC version doesn't support dwg/dxf either.

I should have written that it's only possible to
buy a PC version at the moment.
The reason I asked if you'd used MoI is because I've never heard it described as a "pita" because of the three deficiencies you then list.
Have you tried the Flow command I mentioned earlier - maybe post a screen-shot of it in action if you have time?

Yes, perhaps you should have done? But fortunately for us Mac users, the beta is free (for the time being anyway).
As for Moi being a PITA, concerning DWG, it IS a pita!! Perhaps I'm just going to have to be the first one to say it then? But it's also a pita that ViaCAD 2D/3D doesn't export 3DS export either- well I don't know about VC Pro, or Shark, as I don't own them. Where Moi comes in, for the immediate future anyway, is that it imports SAT, which is great, because I can then export from SAT to 3DS from Moi. It's a bit of a faff, but it works pretty well. :)
And, no, I haven't tried the flow command. Do I need to? Am I supposed to demonstrate some fantastic skill with it that I can show off to you on the forum? I don't see the point. :)

Ok, now I understand that software is a "pita" to you if it doesn't have a certain feature, but I must admit that I've got loads of software like that.
The point about asking you to demonstrate the Flow command in MoI v3 (if you had time), is that as you are a beta tester, you've got access to this new tool and would be able to show us, as Shark/ViaCAD users, why something like it might be worth having in our software.

No history. But it does work, and is very reliable, or seems to be. Martin, I'm quite happy to play with this feature you are talking about, but to be honest, I'm not a 'beta tester', I've just got the 'free' public Mac OSX beta. Software companies should really do their own beta testing instead of relying on unpaid professionals, who are already trying to bring an income in, to do it for them?

I think the flow command is pretty interesting. I asked the Spatial guys if they could investigate something similar. What I like about the flow command is you can design a 2D extruded shape that is then wrapped to a complex 3D shape. Tim

Tom

Agreed Antoine. :) I've actually pretty much given up on Rhino for the moment. Moi OSX is looking very good, despite my minor criticisms. Moi imports SAT from ViaCAD pretty well (v11). All inexpensive CAD is a pain in the arse at the end of the day....?

That's pure snobbery. How would you satisfy whinges like "It's a horror!" or "It's a PITA!" from a software QC program, knowing that the customer WHO BOUGHT IT is bigoted against it because he wasn't charged enough?
