I have a block primitive that has been shaped (for a furniture piece back).

Can you try removing all the links and history and then try the bend? That is if there are links to remove.

I "supressed" items in the history. Helped a bit....
I still can't get it to bend in the other direction. Very frustrating. Shouldn't be this hard.

What if you changed the object type to surfaces, then stiched them back into a solid and then try the bend?

One last thing that I can suggest, I read this tip about adding a line to act as the axis for the bend. Draw a line where you would like to make the bend happen (create the line right on the object). When using the blend tool, click each endpoint of the line that you drew for the bend axis. The direction of the bend will follow the sequence of the endpoints picked.

An alternate way of working when your working with thin surfaces like sheet metal is to model as a geometric primitive (cube), apply your radiuses and then use the shell tool to remove all of the faces that you don't need. The advantage of this is that you can then alter a number of dimensions easily, including changing radius.
