Hey guys,

I am exporting step out of VC3d into Shot.

I have changed all the pen colors so I can assign different materials. But when the stp file comes into shot, the pen colors are not there.

Has anyone run into this problem? Does anyone want to see my file?

Thanks,

Mike...

P.S. This could have also gone into the import/export forum, but I figured it was more relevant to rendering...

Try it as a .obj file - you should get better results, I think.

I'll take a look at the file and see how it goes into Octane Render, if you want to post it here.

Thanks Martin!

I've attached the part I am having problems with.

I can't use .obj because I end up with a million faces in Shot.

When I import a stp file in Shot all the colors are grouped by ViaCad pen colors.

So in the example file I attached, the tire should be one material and the wheel a different material. But that's not what happens for me!

Mike can you export it as a V7 file as I'm still on ViaCAD Pro v7?

I don't think ViaCAD is exporting the colours/textures in .stp format.

I'd export as a .obj file as I said previously, because the colours should then come through OK, although I do get the impression that some of the information that some programs need may not be present in a VC .obj export. For instance, when I first bought Octane a few weeks back, .obj files would only import with one colour and that made me think that VC was at fault.

However, soon after my purchase, Octane released an update which solved the problem I was having. If you search this forum, others were having similar problems with their rendering programs as well. The problem seems to be 50/50 between the CAD and the renderer.

Here's a quick render of your wheel exported as a .obj into Octane @ 81200 triangles.

By the way, I'm pretty sure KeyShot will convert you STEP file into a mesh anyway, so you may as well export as a .obj from VC to ensure it retains the vertex normal information in the original form.

Attached is the .obj file I used for the render.

Thanks for testing that Martin. So it's ViaCad, not changing the color of the faces when being exported via stp.

I guess I'll have to use the obj format, and group by material/source upon import.

I don't have Keyshot. I have Bunkspeed Shot. ;)

Did you have to add that blue wall, or did Octane do that automatically?

I added that wall in VC so I got a bit of a reflection from the Octane environment.

Just to correct myself a little. VC does seem to be exporting colours (try importing the file back in to prove it), but my other software doesn't seem to pick it up, in the same way that your Bunkspeed Shot doesn't either. This might be due to shortcomings on both sides of the import/export chain - I can't say for sure where the problem lies.

But anyway, I'm more or less certain that 99% of rendering the software that accepts nurbs files will convert it to a mesh - so you're still better off exporting as a .obj file from VC and retaining the original normals, which helps to ensure nice clean renders.

All the best.
Martin.
