Ok, I've been having issues with ViaCAD all night.
From unknown crashes, to not being able to save my files!
I also keep getting ACIS errors... whatever they are?
and Viacad is currently using 1.7gigs of memory!!!!!
(the saved files I do have are under 20megs)

There are times when I go to use the push/pull tool, and the program
hangs for 2-3 minutes before it become responsive again.
The program is lagging really bad and so slow to respond.

My biggest problem right now, is I can not save my file!
even the backup come back with an error of unable to save.

I must say, I really like ViaCAD, its so intuitive, and easy to use(when it works)
...but the stability is horrible :mad:

My build is 984. Is there a newer build available?
How do I go about getting it?

I'm running windows7 64bit, and notice Viacad is 32bit.
Although my laptop is WinXP 32 bit, and has the same issues.

This usually means that you have deleted lines used in constructing 3D objects.

This looks like a very complex object you have there.
I believe that there is a limit to the size of the ViaCad database and that the inability to save is a symtom of exceeding that limit. Things that you can do as a work round are:- Compact the drawing, this will delete the undo list. If this doesn't work then you have to remove links from objects.

I general, if you are drawing very complex object it is better to do a series of drawings of component objects and a separate assembly drawing.
Unfortunately neither ViaCad nor Shark has the ability to update an assembly drawing after changes are made to the component drawings.

How I made the items in 3D:
Used an external program to create the original gear teeth(DXF)
(I had to ungroup the imported file)
Then I used 'cover surface' to sheet it, then pulled it to the thickness I needed.
Then the original DXF lines got deleted. Everything seemed fine, and it was such
and easy process!

I really don't think this clock is anymore complicated then the nitro engine?
Besides the gear teeth, its just a bunch of disks...

I've tried compacting the drawing and simplifying the objects, but it did not help (and deleted a couple surfaces in the gears too!)

Is there another way of building the clock that I should be trying?

Well, I thought I would try making a simpler model.
But now I can't get as far as I had!

This is just crazy?! :confused::eek:

I'd upload the file, but well, ah, I CAN"T SAVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I really need help with this!!!

Yes, I tried a different location... some thing...
I can not progress any further with building my project :confused:
Talk about being discouraged :mad:

And after seeing this video, there should be "NO" reason why I can not get mine to work!

Hi Chris

Did you try exporting the file as dwg, sat or step vs saving?

Or
Maybe try exporting the complex gear w teeth as sat and import back in ?

Hi J, thanks for the suggestions.

I just tried exporting as an STL, and lost all the 'parts'
Everything, is now one solid piece.
(although the file size is under 2 megs vs 20meg for the viacad version)

I get the 'Access Violation' errors whenever I try to move (imported) items...

Maybe if I upload the individual files someone could take a looksee?

When I get more time, I'm going to try and rebuild this whole thing.

I "REALLY" need to get this to work... both for my own sanity, and for the continuation of using this program...

Select all items and then export but check selected and multifile boxes and then it will save each item as separate file.

Well, that was NUTS!!

Not only did I get 'Export errors' but once all the errors where acknowledged, there was over 2500 files saved to the folder, before Viacad crashed.

The files saved are all 3kb big.
file names: Unti_Line_229879_206.stp
- the 206 increases one by one for each file up to 2697 before it crashed.

I am starting to suspect the original imported files, but still...

I'll put together a small vid of what I'm doing... maybe that can help
explain whats going on?

Okay, here is a video of how I create each gear.
Once I had all the gears created, I imported them
one by one into one file for the final design...

that is, until I could no longer save the file...........

And here is the import of the minute dial.
Once I have the dial in place, I go to save the file...
this time(first time for this) I could not change the name of the file and save...
Dunno why?!

So I just hit the 'save' button... goes through the motion... then returns the error.

Then, it kicks up with the ACIS errors...
and I can not continue....

Can you post one of the dxf files of the gears, if you zip it then the forum will upload, or import one to vc and upload just that.

Here is the 120 tooth gear I used...
I just imported the DXF file into ViaCAD, and saved as vc3 file.

...as in the video, I made all my gears that way...
I made the base, then imported the gears one by one to the base...
saving along the way...

When exporting the solids try putting parts on separate layers and shut off the layers and export the parts one by one. I think Jason's idea of exporting will work best to get you out of the infected file if that is what's wrong. I have had the same issues. I'll import a part from a file that's acting up it infects the new file. Export the parts out and delete the problem file.
