I'm using ViaCAD Pro Version:7.0.0 Build:967 and I'm using mm in my workspace, but when I'm exporting a step file for manufacture I get everything in inches (1mm becomes 25.4).
in the step file I find this line "#64= (CONVERSION_BASED_UNIT('INCH',#163)LENGTH_UNIT()NAMED_UNIT(#166));"

But my units in viacad is mm, have I missed something?

STEP files are in general exported in the internal unit used by Shark/VC resp. the ACIS kernel (= inch) and not the user unit.

Therefore the unit used is documented in the STEP file header sothat the destination software may convert in the desired/another unit during import.

An unit conversion always contains the risk of possible rounding errors which is avoided if the unit is converted by the importing application only once.

Yes some software import it always as inch.

e.g.
I work in Shark with metric unit - export model to step as metric.
But always when import I get this model as inch :(

surely not, because Shark exports always in inch (see above).

you may want try to switch your importing app to an imperial unit (e.g. inch), than import the STEP file and switch back to your metrical user unit again.

Thanks Norbert,

I understand this, but this is not good soultion for me. I Just think that I should be able to choose units save format. And If I chosse metric then Shark should save is as metric.

Software should do what user want not in other way.

P.S.
Why STEP could not have similar option as IGES or DWG.

sure, therefore you should ask the maker of the importing app (btw, which?) why their software is ignoring the unit defined in the STEP header.

probably because the data exchange filter used ([URL="http://www.spatial.com/products/3d-interoperability"]InterOp[/URL] from Spatial) does not support it for the STEP format?

Yes - I I know that, I rather wanted to write that if I could choose units in step export window..
