Greetings all.
Does anyone know if ViaCad can apply a surface to a Point Cloud, so I can save it as an STL file for subsequent machining?
Attached is a sample file I grabbed from the internet, which should do nicely for demonstation purposes.

Thanks, Martin.

Did you try the standard export for stl from ViaCAD and try that for machining? The point cloud is usually the raw data that is converted into stl format. I think that ViaCAD pro and up can convert surfaces into points but not ViaCAD 2d/3d.

Try selecting a solid and going into object properties and adding u v lines as many as you want. Then select everything and edit change object type to curves. Then use the points along curve tool and you can build a point like cloud with as many points as you want from a solid.

Jason.
Yes, I tried that, but it just throws up an error message when I try to save the file. I need some way of applying a surface to the collection of points, so it creates a mesh before I save it.

Thanks, Martin.

Sorry I misread you first post you want point cloud x,y,z data to surfaces. Is this something you want to do a lot or just a couple of times? Are you digitizing your own data from a sample?

Hi Jason.
I've been asked to recreate some embossed plaques and I wanted to use a digitising probe on my cnc milling machine to create a point cloud image, but I need to make it into a mesh first, for use with the CAM software. It's the sort of function I wouldn't use every day, but would be a valuable addition to my arsenal.

Thanks for your help, Martin.

You can use points as the internal 'guides' in a cover surface with guides

Have you tried this ?

Not sure - Perhaps this is only in Shark !?
