I just read an article, sorry no link, about how Apple seems to be going away from making a tower computer, just Mac Mini and the iMac.
I use Mac computers for their lower maintenance, and because of my investment in software. It would be quite an expense to move everything over to Windows 7 for me.
Iirc the reasoning is that Apple seem to be releasing fewer pro apps and that the MacPro line is updated less often.
So, I am happy that, at least, Shark will be dual platform for the foreseeable future, Thanks Tim!

I noticed they don't make the macbook anymore either. They replaced it with the Air but it's currently more powerful than my 3 year old macbook.

I recently got a new 21.5" imac and while it lacks the upgrading ability of a tower, the amd graphics card seems quite powerful indeed. I imagine they will increase these in processor and graphics power in the future models as they move away from mac pros.

Apple is a company of constant change.. nothing they sell is bound to be around forever.. On one hand it's exciting for people who love macs, but disappointing to others who want support for the machines they already have but aren't really supported. Ever-changing technology coupled with aggressive marketing doesn't make for permanency in anything except of course apple's cashflow.

Updates for the Mac Pro are based on Intel Xeon processor releases, with the next version soon (Octo core Xeon's?). I don't expect the Mac Pro to be killed any time soon as it is still a profitable product for Apple.

On the other hand, Thunderbolt promises some alternatives to a tower chassis:

As for Pro software, I'd say that Final Cut Pro, Motion and Compressor plus Logic Pro and Mainstage are probably going to be it.

How do you know the towers are profitable?

Considering that they've been eliminating and dismembering their pro apps, I don't know why they would want to bother with a tower at a price premium. The OS also seems to be going the way of the iPhone for user simplicity. The new version of Final Cut is certainly lacking.

As far as I can tell, Apple makes their money through iTunes and the app store. The 'computer' got to be more of a pricey 'dock' for your iPhone or pod. Now, they're even moving away from the computer, and making the i-things self-contained.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if they dropped towers. Jobs has been historically against them anyway. iOS is the way they're going-it's the way they've been going from the start of the Mac. I hope not, but it certainly looks that way.
