I normally do not shut down my computer. After surfing this forum and opening some of the sample files in AC v8 last night. I closed the laptop lcd and put the computer to sleep. Today when I first stated VC and opened a file I have been using to explore some of the programs capabilities. I chose the select tool and tried to select one of the objects. It could not be selected either by clicking on it or through window or reverse window. Only when I double clicked was the object selected and of course all of the objects in the drawing were selected. I then closed the drawing and opened a new drawing. Selected the solid model tool and created a block. Selected the select tool and tried to select the block. Could not. I was able to select different tools to work with but never any object I created. Finally I closed the program and restarted my laptop, opened the program and the study drawing I had been working with. The select tool worked fine. Has anyone else experienced this. If it happens again I will document in more detail.

I've had weird, not-reproducible-on-command stuff happen. The most vexing, irritating, discombobulating one is when the keys don't issue the command because for some reason the zoom in/out function is activated. This doesn't become READILY apparent unless the user middle-clicks and causes the cursor to report what mode it is in. I don't know who it switches, but it is infuriating because it can cause the user to self-doubt and start tapping random keys testing for a response. Also, even when anticipating that this will happen, it happens RANDOMLY, and it can really psychologically ruin the flow.

Another random thing that happens is when clicking on a tool, the clicked tool does not activate. Rather, 'Deep Select" or some recently-used but not last-used command takes over. Then, when the user fails to realize this because eyes are now shifted to the geometry at hand, the user suddenly is dealing with sluggishness because the logicursor -- if in certain snaps -- starts snapping to all sorts of things in the hit radius while zooming is happening if the user is scrolling the wheel. This induces erratic performance or panning actions and simultaneously the user is anticipating the laying down of lines on screen. The sudden frustration and suspense of belief kick in and it takes a bit of a second to realize the logicursor lines are indeed NOT the lines the user set about drawing.

Hitting "Esc" and the backtick key do nothing to get the user out of these frustrating modes. It takes hitting the "Ctrl" key at least once. But, to find out the mode, at least in the random go-into-zoom-mode-on-the-user scenario, middle-clicking will help the user figure out what mode the cursor is in.

Something really needs to be done about this. It might be bad signals in the keyboard, but this happens to me regardless of using only the laptop's keyboard, or using 2 other USB-based keyboards. It's spurious and it happens at just the wrong time, magnifying frustration.

Possibly the 'select mask' has something to do with this ?
Under 'window', 'select mask', make sure the options you want are checked.

Thanks Ryan, I checked 'select mask' and all the options were selected. So I don't think that had anything to do with problem. I have built robots and programed microprocessors to control them. One, operating in auto mode would suddenly stop, back up, spin 360, and then resume its original bearing. Never did find the glitch/bug. Finally cleared the program and reloaded the same program and the glitch/ bug never occurred again. The select tool problem may never occur again. I think it probably had some thing to do with having not shut down the computer for several days. I am leaving it on for an extended period now to see if the problem returns.

Whether I run my instance of Win7 across suspend/unsuspend for several days, 2 or 3 times a day, or just intentionally or unintentionally cause it to reboot, I still have the problem. I am wondering whether it is the file size and complexity of content. My drawing model now stands at 60mb, and windows has about 1.2 GB of RAM allocated to it. The CPU it uses is not maxed out (two in the machine, one to Linux, one to VirtualBox, which allocates resources to Win7).

My drawing is of a ship's hull. I have decks, sideshell, girders, stiffeners, and bulkheads as well as other features in there. Pretty much all of them have curves/lines and surfaces as the basis of their solids. I have not made solids for the shell plating since it would be ... "excessive", as I can already get much of that info from freeship/Delftship. I could and should at some point break down the model, but if I do that, then I will need external references capabilities. I thought that VCP 7 had it, but im apparently mistaken. It seems I must u/grade to one of the Shark levels.

The problem appeared again. This time I opened a model I have been working with since receiving VC 8. Things were fine. Closed that drawing and started a new one to play with symbols. Opened concept explorer and inserted some 3d fasteners. The first insert stayed selected and I could not deselect it. The odd thing is that I could select other symbols and insert them into the drawing. I then closed the drawing and opened a new drawing with the same results. I then closed the program and restarted it, same result. I then closed the program and restarted the computer. Select tool works as it should.
