Sometimes the number of elements in a layer does not match what we can actualy count on the screen (after "show all" of course).
I captured one invisible surface in the attached file :
- it can be selected, copied, pasted
- it cannot be seen.
- check object says it is "questionable"...
A vacuum cleaner tool, please !

Time to pull this topic, it happen to me often, just try this:
make a new file, create three or four layers, in layer one create two objects (any one is good), then group this ones and change them to another layer, then copy the object an delete it, a warning about the objects dependencies appear, just click ok, paste the object and you will have more objects indicated on the layer explorer window, repeat this step and the object count will increase no matter that you only have a group with two objects, it seems it related to the grouped objects only.
