Applying Shell Tool to design

Try as I may I know I'm doing something wrong. I've finally drawn the part I wanted. Now I'm needing to hollow it out, but I seem to be unable to get the shell tool to work. I think I did it wrong. I can't find a way to attach the file.
I've never used CAD before, so I'm learning as I go.
Can anyone help me?

Hi James,
I'm assuming you want something like this?
Try looking at this...
http://docs.imsidesign.com/projects/ViaCAD-v14/ but essentially select the shell tool, select the surface, and it will shell normal to the workplane, you can change the thickness in the dialogue boxes too.
