Extruding a solid from a non-planar profile

Can you do it - or can't you ?

It's really just the inconsistency I'm struggling with ...

1. - Take a non-planar profile - you CAN'T extrude it !

However, make a non-planar surface (eg. cover surface)

2. - You CAN'T extrude it using the 'by distance' option (say 20mm)

3. - But you CAN extrude it using the 'by vector' option (same 20mm)

So - my question is - why the difference ?

You clearly CAN extrude a non-planar profile into a solid

Why then is the extrude tool lying to me in points 1 & 2 above

Shouldn't we be striving to strip out such inconsistencies (- if only by adding the workaround to the error dialog)

Hi Jol,
Thanks for a very handy work around, the Curves Not Planar Pop Up appears a lot for me.
Strange, if you Delete the Cover Surface, you have an extruded non planar solid.

Extrude by distance assumes a "normal" extrude, ie what would be normal to a planar surface. Non-planar surfaces don't have an obvious normal, but a definite vector removes the ambiguity.
