Hello,

I am trying to make a gear. I have created the cylinder disk the way I want it, now I need to add or subtract 60 uniform teeth around the circumference. Any ideas. Please remember I am a newbie to Cad, so go slow.

Thanks

I've used this before:

http://hessmer.org/gears...luteSpurGearBuilder.html

It is an online gear generator that creates a DXF file. You can then read the dxf file into ViaCAD and extrude into a solid.

Tim,

I went to the website and created the gear, works like a charm.

Thanks

Hi, I too am trying to model a spur gear. I went to the site you mentioned above and down loaded the .dxf file. But I am unable to make a solid out of the template. I tried Push/Pull but it can not find a face. I tried Extrude but I get an error message "Gaps detected in profile! Fix Gap and try again."

If someone could give this a try and let me know how to make a solid out of it I would be eternally grateful.

Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark,
Ungroup each gear, and then you can extrude.

How is it that you've named your file cycloidal while the site that Tim indicated produces involutes?

Hi Mark,
I forgot to mention that I always delete the outline of a gear, and just use it as a dumb solid. A specific gear always keeps the same outline, you can modify
the bore, or add a hub and keyway to the dumb solid, and change the thickness with the Thicken Solid Tool.

Hi Murray, The website named the file CyclodalGear.dxf. Not sure why. Darn good question. Humm, makes me wonder what I have.

Thanks,
Mark

Hello again L. Banasky,

I have a couple of newbie question. To my surprise, I was able to open your gears.sfx file with ViaCAD Pro version 9 but don't understand why the .sfx file extension. What's the difference between .sfx and .vcp? How do you save a file as .sfx?

Dumb question #2. How do you "delete the outline of a gear, and just use it as a dumb solid"? I'm guessing you have to first take the outline and make it a surface. I have no idea how to do that either. Spent several hours playing around but not finding a method that works other than doing an "ungroup". then a "Push/Pull".

I could never get the "Thicken Solid" to do anything.

Thanks for your help!

Mark

Hi Mark,
Answer for #1 I can save as, or export to .sfx, I think you can open or import .sfx or .vcp because they both share the same code.
Answer for #2 If you select the edge of a gear you extruded, you will be given a choice of selecting the part, or one of the many lines
that make up the outline of the gear. If you select the part only and move it, the lines do not follow the part unless everything is selected.
You can HIDE the part, select the entire outline and delete it and not worry about all those lines that are really not needed.
The part becomes a Dumb Solid because you can no longer modify the outline. You can however add holes, keyways or a hub to the part, and still modify those features.
For some reason I'm not a big fan of Push/Pull. THICKEN SOLID will add or subtract what ever you enter in the dialog box from the surface you select.

Hi Larry,
Thank you for the words of wisdom! "All those lines" along the gear teeth were also killing the update rate, seemed to be processing for-ever. After playing around I think I have been able to duplicate your technique.

BTW, I'm working on my PHD in ViaCAD, or so it would seem. My goals are simple but it has turned into a time sink. All I want to do is make a model of an enclosure and a few simple gears. I wonder if anybody has ever really created a successful product with ViaCAD. Love to hear some success stories but that is a different forum for sure.

Thank you again!

Best regards,
Mark

Mark,

While your statement was perhaps intended to be somewhat rhetorical, the "Gallery" in the forum provides some examples of success. To save you some time in searching, here's a couple of links that provide quick examples (I just grabbed a couple and certainly did not search all the posts):

http://forum.punchcad.com/defau...osts&t=3346#post6950

http://forum.punchcad.com/defau...=posts&t=1818#post27

I doubt that everybody who uses ViaCAD is active in the forum, so I think many successes never get posted.
