CU, and ViaCAD are sold as tools for designers.
Designers like to make things look good as well as work well.

The software that his forum runs on vBulletin allows for alternate styles. or skins.
If you click on this link:http://forums.omnigroup.com/index.php and then go to the popup at the bottom of the page you have the option to view the forum with this dull very PC like look, or a much cleaner and easier to read and follow look.
The attached image (that for some crazy reason can not be viewed as an inline image) showes the two styles side by side.
My vote is for the 'Lithigraphica' style.
A source for skins is:http://www.vbstyles.com/index.php?do=vbulletin-skins
Many, many others are available, just do a google search for "vBulletin styles skins"
