Jol,

SPLIT SOLID should have the ability to pick multiple surfaces for splitting and not just one ?

Another more snazzy and clever way might be to use the CLIP PLANE facility BUT with the added option to "Extract Edges" at any given point. This would speed up workflow as the designer could input XYZ station and the cut value along any given axis (this is currently shown above when in clip plane) & it is dynamic therefore if by eye is good enough.... An extra icon on the Infinite plane tool palette would be all it needed

I like this idea :D:D

In Rhino we have a command called contour which can cut multiple sections to a specified distance, these polycurves can then be used to split the solid (doesnt have to be just a surface) into individual solids...well with a few more operations - see file and commands..

Current VC Split Solid is okay but just needs opening up to accept multiple picks and/or a group of surfaces IMHO that is :p

but I think the clip plane only works on facets shown .. ie the geometry remains unchanged. I'm just not sure that clip plane has the potential to provide edges - but I may be wrong

Jol.
That huge yaught is only 200mb ?

I am working on a handheld gizmo for solar panel installers. The thing is just over 210mm long, and the file hovers around 200mb. I even do a Save As a couple of times a day to reduce the file size.

You see that's where you've gone wrong .. contrary to popular misconception, it's not actually size that matters

No, but software makes hardware look good.

Jol, very likely to be my blonde moment. What I'm trying to ask/say is: where is the time saved doing multiple slice planes at once, if you have to locate them first anyway? I'm a VC user, so if its something to do with the history tree, to me it's like one of those phone ring tones that only young people can hear. I understand you're calling for tool improvements, but I don't understand this one. I'm seeking enlightenment, is all.

"Say I had a weird shaped chair (.. and it can happen) .. what if I want to break it up into say 20 solids for CNC'ing a prototype. I know I can select the part and split - select the result and split again .. and on and on

All I want to do .. is .. just like the "cut sections" tool .. I wanna be able to select and object and chop it up with multiple infinite planes or surfaces I've thrown thru' the object .. but I want to do it in one operation - not say 20

I think it's a fair ask !

Of course each infinite plane or splitting surface needs to be placed .. and not necessarily in a tidy row - or at the same angle. Not sure what you're proposing as an alternative Zumer

Again, please don't give me a workaround .. i'm not setting a challenge - I'm just stating an improvement I've wished for thousands of times in the past 10 years using these tools"

It wasn't intended to be that way, more educative- so I'm sorry if you took it that way.

But yeah- it's boring, so I'll stop it. :)

No worries

- I spend a lot of time on here to try and improve these tools

- We've always had very good relations on this forum

.. I don't think the Mac vs PC thing aids to either. Parity has always been top of Tim's list - to his great credit !

Use what you choose : )
