Me, machines, grinders, and laptops are not making the best 4 way. Another screen down-fortunately usable. This being a new laptop I would replace screen, but I am not happy with its performance. My requirements are simple for the next one: plastic case (not metal) - metal can ground to weld table and corrupt hard drive. touch screen - going to win8 so it is almost mandatory... would go mac, see first requirement, and my environment is not such I do not want to protect it beyond productivity. lots of big vents - the tight made computers (like mac) grab grinder grit- big vents allow airhose blowing out. 15 " about screen - resolution is not key. I am leaning towards sony fit e 15 (intel I ?) no graphics card or Toshiba amd a8 no graphics card. Anyone have opinions on which intel I? or amd A? sans graphics is better for vcp of course.

a system without graphics card could be difficult to use... stay away from integrated GPUs as e.g. intel HD 3000/4000 series, they are fine for office/internet/multimedia but will not work stable/fast for OpenGL based 3D modelers. also stay away from W8 because the Windows desktop composition cannot be disabled anymore sothat this may conflict w/ OGL based applications too... and you obviously do not need fancy tiles and fingerprints on the screen to be productive. Support for stable W7 will end 2020, thus no need to jump on the new Vista. last but not least stay away from the AMD CPUs, they are cheap but unfortunately still not being on par with the intel Core series. finally, go for a intel Core i5/i7 of the third ('Ivy Bridge') or the recent fourth ('Haswell') generation combined with a dedicated nVidia GeForce GTX graphics. Replacing the HDD with a SSD (as e.g. the fine Samsung 840 Pro series) will give the system an additional boost. hth, Norbert

Yes, Norbert is correct. This is also a problem reported by tech support. Tim

I'm amazed to see that Shark FX is still working very well on my old MacbookPro 2007. Just a bit slower than on my New MacBookPro retina 2013 Core i7. V9 will probably make a difference...

Hey
I was testing Shark FX with laptop dell i7/650m/Windows8
And I get problem with work corect of Shark.
Maybe becouse of Windows 8 or maybe becouse of grafic card.
(

It was strange becouse configuration of laptop quite good.
My advice go to shop install demo of Shark and try use it. - Sometimes shops allow for it.
P.S.
I totaly dislike Windows 8 - it makes my daily work much harder. Why somoene create such system...
Try to buy with Windows 7

Well, if this is a consolation to you, a certain announcement today, from MS' CEO, caused MS' stock to rise by 9%! Maybe that news will lead to significant "corrections" or changes in win 8???

So me being on the poor side of the cheap/poor spending bar I am looking at ebay. I see the quadro and firepro computers go for lots less than gaming graphics laptops. I also see the pro grades have less power, somehow they out perform the others in solidworks benchmarks (by big factors). Is there a great downfall to the pro grade cards (quadro fx880 on elitebook with i7 gen 1) looking affordable. I will not get a win8 computer without touch screen. So win7 will be on the next laptop, unless somehow a fancy touch screen gen 3 i7 shows up in the parking lot of Krogers. Happy for all the help.

will find out next weekend how it works (shipping time and all). Giddy to try it out, and see if it is almost all that. It is mandatory I tell yall how it works, or the question and answer and mutual hair-pulling concept of the forum is moot.

the CAD series Quadro FX and AMD FirePro/GL do not show an advantage for low-end/mid-range modelers because these simply do not make use of the advanced OpenGL capabilities of the video driver of these series... which is the onyl difference to the consumer series. Actually the GPUs are always the same but regularly much slower for the CAD series in the same price range because using smaller GPUs. In short, a GeForce GT/GTX is the best bang for the buck... besides you woud like to use Catia, NX or Creo/ProE too. htc, Norbert

in my hands my previous loved elitebook 8770w. a little more computer than mobile in the mobile-computer world. I settled on the 17" screen because the used 15" ones are expensive. Fast, really, really fast. vcp8 has some hesitation on files over 3.5 mb, was able to open a 38 mb .dwg file with a little extra time. acad 2010 runs smooth in 2d, as well as acad runs on the detailers cad (gamer asus, maxed everything) desktop at work in 3d- so far. vcp9 with 64 bit ability should help even the score out some. even with lopsided score, vcp still outperforms on overly spline dependent surfaces and solids. The return of the matte screen is a welcome site. Keyboard is a tad overspaced and the power cord goes-inta location are the only second impression design questions I have so far. Sacrificed some weight and battery for the mil-spec grit and slime packaging, and hope it last me almost forever.
