Does anyone have any idea why a single face seems to have split itself into four different faces when i try to shell? (see pic)

I've created a half pipe, spiral form, which now when i go to shell the 'inner', flat surface it will not select as one surface to shell from. Its divided into four selectable faces - so error message appears even if i select all four faces???
