What Tim Olsen Drives

When I was a child, my school notebooks were often littered with drawings and doodles of many things, but mostly fantasy cars. I often sketched my favorite cars (Lamborghini Countach, Ferrari 288 GTO, McLaren M6, Lotus Esprit S2, etc.) in amongst my notes and between the lines of my homework. How entertaining that must have been for my teachers!

I also liked to create original designs that would reflect the most signature details from each of these models. I dreamed of making these cars come to life, but, alas, turning fantasy into reality is an expensive venture that is not usually afforded by such an indebted father and husband as I have come to be.

And that's exactly why l love ViaCAD. ViaCAD, to a great extent, now gives me the ability to give my ideas a splash of virtual reality and at least bring them to life in a way I never could before.

The following images are just such a "doodle" that I have been able to bring to life, thanks to the capabilities of ViaCAD. This particular model is one that is mostly experimental, as well as educational. I had been trying to produce an exact model of an existing car, but put it on temporary hold due to the frustrations of not getting it completed to the level of satisfaction I desired. I began scratching this car out, free form style, and then began experimenting with different modeling techniques and along the way learning more about the functionality and capabilities of ViaCAD as I never have before.

This model was completed in just the base version of ViaCAD V7 2D/3D and is not rendered.

That's just BEAUTIFUL! This kind of pictures show exactly how capable ViaCAD is, and when you add to that its price tag, you get (IMO) the most affordable and capable entry-level CAD package on the planet.

Tim, not only that, but I'm shooting for a spot on the Punch! website!

I find that I actually end up using ViaCAD more for artistic expression than nitty gritty design work. Sure, I've designed some cool stuff that I want to build and also reverse engineer stuff that I've already built, but I often get carried away just working and reworking an idea until it becomes a model that's pleasing to the eye.

If someone were to ask me why choose ViaCAD over TurboCAD Deluxe or DesignCAD, I would probably just show them this model and say "Because that's why." It would take you way longer to do this on DesignCAD (and it still wouldn't look as good) and you absolutely could not do this on TurboCAD Deluxe. I've used both, so I know from experience.

Here are a couple more renditions of this same car. I couldn't leave well enough alone and made a few mods. I replaced the Countach-style wheels with something more custom, added a modified Countach-style wing, and reshaped the front air dam slightly.

I really like this in purple as well.
