how do I force the "Tangent Point Circle" tool to provide the alternate solution? without regard to where I select the two circles, the "Tangent Point Circle" tool provides the same solution................

Wit the three tangent circle command, you can do it but you need a vertical line away from circle 1 and 2 in the region of the big circle away from the dashed circle. It will give tangents to both small circles. I suppose you need to explore how big you need that dash circle by moving the vertical line to adjust.

three point circle tool will do the job. hold down option key while picking the tangent points of circle #1 and circle #2. finish with an 3rd click. later you can change the diameter (the tangent points will stay aligned)

looking for the explicit solution versus a very good "trial & error" solution. I can get it close with "trial & error" but the answer is destined for a tool path.....

what is the Windows equivalent for the Mac's "option key" ??

the exact solution I'm looking for is the circle whose center is on the second line AND that's tangent to both of the given circles! if the "Tangent Point Circle" tool would cooperate, a spline curve could be used to connect a number of centers of circles with difference diameters. the intersection of spline curve and the second straight line should be the answer. this is one of those constructions I don't remember running into in Descriptive Geometry ........

This is the geometric solution if you know the diameter of the circle you want to draw. I don't know how to relate it to the tangent point circle tool.

thanks! as it turns out R3 is not known... but your solution/approach could be used as a means to plot a range of centers for fitting with a spline curve to find the unknown radius whose center in on the second line; essentially a descriptive geometry substitution for "Tangent Point Circle"

"Three Tangent Circle" isn't working for me....... I've tried selecting the first and second curves with "ctrl" also pressed and a 3rd click with and without "ctrl" pressed to no avail; SharkCAD Pro waits for me to select a third curve................. is there something special about where the 3rd click is done??

Not three tangent, three POINT circle, hold ctrl to snap to tangents of the initial two circles, random LMB click for the arbitrary size. As Rokoko said, when you resize, it follows the tangents, until you release selection focus. Nice.

But, looking over the thread and what your exact requirement is, the answer is to mirror either of the two circles across the line and use the three tangent circle.
