Greetings, everyone. I have another inquiry today. I am currently attempting to model the 2D profiles of an elaborate object from the 3D part assembly of the same object by sketching the visible geometry on a plane in front of the object. This is tedious and most likely inaccurate, so I was wondering if there was a more efficient and rational option for completing the same task. Is there perhaps a way to project the geometry from a certain view of a 3D object onto a 2D plane? I could still manually model from the 3D object, but I would prefer not to. Any help or advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hello Camdyn

You can add an infinite plane and do cross section/s of an assembly. Add Infinite plane, then use cut section tool. You can then move the 2d profiles where you need them.

You can use the explode edge tool to get 2d profiles - not sure this is useful in your specific circumstance, but might be useful to use this tool at times.

Also there are project to plane tools to try. Add infinite plane, then use the Project Curve To Plane Tool

Regards

Jason

Model-to-sheet viewports project silhouette outlines too, it's an orthographic shadow outline with visible foreground detail.

Thanks for the reply, jdi000. I gave your advice a try, and it worked, but it ended up projecting each and every individual crevice of the object onto the plane rather than just the outermost visible geometry, which is all I had wanted. This helped, but I was able to find an easier way to achieve my intentions. Thank you, though!

That is interesting, murray. It wasn't quite what I was looking for, but it was neat to learn, and I am likely to use your advice for something sometime in the future. Thanks!

For those of you who care, I stumbled across exactly what I had been inquiring for unintentionally. Turns out, if you open a 3D drawing in 2D mode, it will automatically generate a 2D sketch for you, and it only shows the outermost geometry. This saved me a lot of headache with projections and planes and editing. All I had to do was select the view I wanted (top/bottom/left/right/etc.) by right clicking next to the sketch and selecting "Change View," then highlighting and copy-pasting the sketch into a new file containing the different 2D views. So simple and so clean. Hope this helps anyone with a similar inquiry!

What you need is the Model to Sheet Feature. You can also use just a Draw view and copy and paste the 3D Model into the draw view. Draw Views works only if the layer view set to Top View. If you have a draw view with the Front view of the model inside, you can drag and drop it while holding Ctrl to a side und you will get the view from this side. Read the Documentation about Draw Views and Model to Sheet. Select as Option "Precise Curves (Slower)" for better results. The Tools in the Palette works not in the 3D Space, this Tools are just for the Draw View Space to create Draw Views from oter Draw Views. You can create a very nice section view from the geometry inside of a draw view.

Note: Draw Views are not selectable when used Page layout called with Keyboard Shortcut before. Change the layer or the window or a tool and it works again.
